How can I tell the difference between a print and a lithograph?
I work in a store that sells Old Tools, paintings and odds n ends, occasionally among the junk we find jewels, and I thought this might be one: I found a beautiful print(lithograph?) of Paul Berthon's Queen of the Netherlands, it's obviously not the original frame and backing, but its priced @ $58. I did some research online and "original" lithographs of this particular piece of art go for upwards of $650. how can i find out if this is a cheap repro or an "original" w/out taking it to an antique/art dealer who might swindle me in the process?
and what is a large-scale reproduction worth if its "originals" are worth $2400 in galleries?
Look a the edition (looks like a fraction, usually with the artist's initials or a signature nearby). If it's a small edition, it's likely the original that was printed with the litho stone. If it's a large edition, or there's no edition mark on it, it's most likely a large-run reproduction print.
