What is the purpose of the notch in a lath hatchet?
Lath hatchets usually have a notch on the same side of the handle as the blade, what is the point of it? Here is an example-

I dont think it is to remove nails, the handle gets in the way and the notch is not small enough to fit under the nail head
It's a hatchet for wood shingles. Normally when you remove wood shingles the head of the nails protrude above the decking making it easier to get at the nails. Regards, Dale
