meat cutting tool? looks like an axe, used in europe and mexico, used by butchers.?
it basically looks like a broad axe without the blade extending passed the end of the Wood Handle, like this one:
http://www.costumeinc.com/Costumes/images/medium/14442-std.jpg
but it's used in meat, I've seen on TV and some other sources, but I never got a name for the tool, what would it called?
are people seriously retarded here, I said it's not a cleaver, that's a knife, the tool I'm asking about specifically looks like the axe in the picture, nothing else, I know what a cleaver is, what I seen was not a cleaver.
Is that picture of the specific tool in question or is it just similar in design?
Either way, the people calling it a cleaver aren't retards. There is no international standard for knife or other cutting tool names. Most knives have at least two ore three names, and each name can be used to describe several knives. That said, looking at this axe, it really could only be used to hack through bones and sinew, thus doing the same job as a traditionally shaped cleaver.
I have been both a butcher and a chef for a number of years and i have never seen or heard of any instrument like that ever used in a kitchen. it looks like it would be hella awkward to use in real butchery, the odd weight distibution would mean you'd have to apply a lot more force then with a normal knife. My only guess is that it's a tool developed by locals for use in the actual killing of the animal rather than the cutting up part.
