Is using Red Cedar wood chips as bedding lethal to guinea pigs?
The guinea pig I got for my birthday is showing signs that it is unwell. One of my family members told me recently that using red cedar wood chips is bad for guinea pigs. He said it causes kidney failure. Is this true?
As far I as know, cedar wood chips don't cause kidney failure, but I do know that it can cause respiratory problems. The strong wood oils in cedar and pine make it difficult for small animals to breathe, and long term exposure can cause severe problems resulting in death.
Don't let this scare you though! There are plenty of alternatives to wood shavings. I use CareFresh for my rabbit a guinea pig. It is a recycled paper product that is very safe to use. Most pet stores carry it, so I would suggest looking for it the next time you are out.
