The sapwood of the Brazilian cherry wood is gray white in color. Jatoba stands at 2350 on the Janka scale which is quite high. It is one of the hardest woods in the world. When compared to red oak, jatoba is 81% harder, when compared to ash it is 78% harder and 62% harder than the hard maple, 23% than the jarrah. All of these figures indicate that jatoba is indeed one of the hardest woods today.
Jatoba has an interlocked grain and is high in density and therefore it might be a little difficult to work with the wood. However, it is very easy to achieve a smooth surface with the wood by sanding it. Nailing would be necessary before sawing or drilling the wood. Jatoba is very widely used today as a wooden flooring option because of its natural beauty and its long life.
