what is the best brand of wood chisel to buy to make up a basic set?
I want to buy three chisels as a present for a friend who does occasional woodwork - for shaping wood and making joints and other general use. What brand is best and what sort of chisels are essential?
I'm an avid woodworker and find that the chisels that I use the most are 1/4, 3/4, 1", & 1 1/2".
the middle two are used for deadbolts and doors, the qtr is for mortice wk and the lg is for chipping out.
you needn't get an expensive set as much as you need to know how to sharpen them.
I've found that my all around peices are ACE Hdwr brand, they are easily replaced if lost, stolen or hit some unfortunate nail in the way. they hold up quite well and you can add to the line for a nominal fee.
I still have my original set aft my purchase and have added to it in size thru the 30yrs.
The steel is good and for the amount of use it gets, a lillle grinding will give you a sharp cut over & over again.
Just store well, get him some caps for the ends and oil now and then aft use. Use a wood hammer so not to destroy the heads nor pean them over. 'Master Machanic's' is the ACE brand;
Marples is another lengthyer brand;
there is also Craftsman @ Sears.
I think you will find that if your friend is a good carpenter and wants to care for his tools with a sharp blade he should know how to sharpen all/or any of the brands...and I think they will outlive him if well cared for.
