I am going to turn a log into a firepit. Advice?
I have a beautiful piece of pine tree trunk that I want to hollow down a bit and turn into a firepit.
I am planning to chisel it out.
After I chisel down enough I am planning to put some air holes into the sides and a piece of slate in the bottom.
The wood is now green (fresh-cut).
I am happy to receive any advice from wood-workers or crafts-people.

When you say charcoal ash, do you mean ash from my grill charcoal? I also have a lot of wood ash.
I was also thinking of sand for a lining. Any thoughts on that?
I realize, btw, that if done properly it will not "burn up" as was erroneously suggested by a "top contributer."
ok well rember when you put holes in it make sure that they are small but big enough for air flow then when you get the disired depth carved out you want to coat the inside with charcoal ash this will help the wood chare instead of buring but dont be surprised if your wood stats smoking it normal for alittle smoke.
