Can't find probabilty to solve the rest of the standard deviation problem.?
I'm drawing a blank. A billiar manufacturer randomly selects a box of 12 cues and weighs each cue in it. In ounces, the cues weigh 17.9, 16.7, 17.3, 17.8, 17.2, 16.9, 16.5, 16.8, 17.1, 16.3, 16.4, and 16.1. What is the mean and standard deviation of these weights? Mean equals n, number of trials, x p, probability of success on a given trial. I cannot find the probability.
Yes you can find the probability. The normal distribution is a probability distribution. After you calculate the mean and the standard deviation check your sample numbers with the z table.
67% of the distribution are one standard deviation +/- from the mean. 98% of the distribution are two standard deviations +/- from the mean.
With your data you get a mean of 16.916 with a standard deviation of .544
16.916 +/- .544 = 16..32 to 17.46 is the range within one standard deviation +/- of the mean 16.916
So there is a .67 probability of randomly selecting a cue that weighs between 16.32 oz to 17.46 oz
i hope this helps
