i built a deck with a covererd roof, can i use 2x4 with 24 inch on centers, how do i know if the wood will be
strong enough to handle all the weight, and if the wood can handle the snow load. or how can i find ot how many pounds per square inch of weight the wood take
There may be some variation with local building codes, but generally speaking use 16 inch on center with 2x4s. I might recommend using 2x6 16 inches on center if there's going to be weight on the roof from snow. Either that or double up every other 2x4 to add rigidity. Rafters should be the same as the ceiling joists.
Just as important is how you tie the new roof into your existing roofline and making sure you have the deck properly attached to your house. Adding that much weight to your existing load bearing wall and roof could cause substantial damage if it's not done correctly.
I'd recommend getting a permit and building yourself a deck you can enjoy for many years to come, that's built to code.
