Can a 3 phase induction motor be supplied with 1 phase, run under no load, and supply power to 3 phase equip.?
I have seen this in a machine shop, installed by an old tinkerer, and used to run his lathes. I believe he used a capacitor start kit on the third leg. Someone answered about it being employed as a generator, and said it was impossible, so I guess I saw a miracle!
If you mean say a 3 phase lathe; yes it can be done. The coils in your 3 phase motor must be connected in STAR this will leave you three connections A B C. Connect A to active and one leg of your capacitor; connect B to the other leg of your capacitor and connect neutral to C. The motor will run (unloaded) at rated speed and current however it can only output approx 1/3 of the power.
I have forgotten what size of capacitor I used but just experiment! Find the size with least current max speed and minimum hum.
