is it possible to use old armor designs (i.e. lamellar, scale mail, chain mail, etc.) with modern materials?
to withstand modern threats (i.e. gun shots, knives, punches, etc.) combineing armor types is also an option, but it sould be lightweight, flexibale, (and mabye even comfurtable and cheap) the matirials can be either moder or ancient, but it should be able to do the above.
Old armour was designed to withstand old threats, i.e. knives, punches, axes, arrows etc. and it will still do that. However, modern old style armour used by re-enactors is often not up to old-fashioned quality standards and should not be relied on, for example the rings in mail are often too large and not riveted. This keeps the cost down.
If you used old designs with new materials, you could make it lighter to give the same level of protection. It will not protect against gunshots.
It would be possible to make a bulletproof breastplate (not flexible) with new materials, but it would be very heavy if metallic, or heavy and expensive if using ceramics. Depends on what sort of bullet and at what range of course.
Modern bulletproof body armour is based on textiles. Textile, padded and felt armour was also used in ancient times. Even with modern materials such as Kevlar or Nylon (much cheaper), they do not work well against knives etc, and you would need to have layer of mail or plates etc on top to handle that threat. You can buy this kind of combo-armour pretty much off the shelf, but it is not cheap.
Is wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a shield an acceptable compromise?
