How can I hang something heavy on a lathe and plaster wall?
Drill a pilot hole? How can I make sure I hit lathe and not plaster
If you are trying to hang an object that is more than 10 pounds it might be much wiser to open up the wall and locate actual studs to fix your hardware to.
This is not because lath and plaster can't handle weight, but because most wooden lath and plaster construction in the US is very old and the wooden lath itself might not be very strong any more.
If it newer lath and plaster construction, then there is a good chance the "lath" is actually a wire mesh... which will not do you any good when you are drilling screws into it!
What are you trying to hang?
An expensive new flat tv? Bookshelves? A full wall mirror?
If any of these installations were to fail it could be extraordinarily expensive, or possibly dangerous.
Best advice: if it's heavy open up the wall and either mount your hardware directly to the studs or get a sheet of sheet metal a little larger than the object you are mounting, get it fixed to all the studs, drywall over it, and then mount your object knowing your self tapping screws will be safely in the sheet metal which is secured to the studs.
