Lignum vitae, the wood of life, also known as iron wood, is a very slow growing tree. It grows in the West Indes, Central America, northern South America, and the Florida Keys.
The wood is dense, strong, and heavy, and is so loaded with resins that things made from it are self lubricating and almost impervious to water. It is so heavy that it sinks in water. It resists rot from insects and mositure.
Lignum vitae has been used for ship construction, butcher blocks, bowling bslls, bearings for submarines, cabinets, clocks, engine parts, forensics, tools, some drugs, herbal remedies, and to treat gout and syphilis (that use didn't work).
Because it is so slow growing and rarely reaches it full possible size and was so sought after for so many things it is now becoming rarer. Man has encroached on its habitat as well. European colonization led to the deforestation of many stands of lignum vitae. Many large trees were cut down to make way for sugar cane cultivation.
