Have the England selectors made a mistake in not calling up Sajid Mahmood?
Sajid Mahmood recently took ten wickets in Lancashire's last Championship match, to help steer them to victory. But the England selectors have overlooked him in favour of the barely fit Ryan Sidebottom.
Given Mahmood's early season form, and the extra pace he could bring to the England attack, have they missed a trick?
Could Mahmood have a pivotal role to play in this summer's Ashes?
No they haven't and I don't think he'd be any good for England at the moment (and definitely not in the Ashes as he averages 52.80 in 3 Tests against Australia). Especially as he's proven how inconsistent he is time and time again and is, for the most part, often a liability.
Sure he has the pace but that's not all that's needed. He needs more accuracy because a lot of the time it isn't there and he isn't consistent enough with his line and length (he'll play one great match and then go off the boil again). Yes he got those wickets recently and has improved in the last year or so, but (as far as I'm aware) it's not often that he gets a large wicket haul. And some of his wickets come when far too many runs have been given away (even in his games for the Lions side he was giving away a lot of runs per wicket. It might have been something like 39 runs per wicket but I'm not sure on the exact figure). That's not good enough and he hasn't done enough to convince the selectors.
Not to say that Sidebottom would be a better choice at the moment because he wouldn't. I think he needs more time in County cricket to spend the time getting properly fit and healthy again. He shouldn't be rushing back like Flintoff has continually done in the past as it leads to more problems in the future.
