Tobaco pipe: What is the most practical and effective process to avoid tobacco pipe bowl from charring?
I'm thinking of a thin coat of anything liquid (eg, resin from trunk of trees mixed with sugar and water). Answers ahould be aside from smoking the bowl half stacked and full stacked alternately, coating the pipe bowl with 50/50 sugar and water concentration, or using briar (I've got no issues concerning the Type Of Wood, I use mahogany and tamarind wood for my bowl. scientific answers please... I'm a woodcarving artist in a bad shape when it comes to the utilization of my masterpiece.Help! lol! ; )
You do not want anything burning except the tobacco. The wood should be briar, harder than any ordinary wood.
All pipes char- in that they develop a layer of charred tobacco inside the pipe. You have seen pipe reamers- that is what the reamers are for. Be careful with your lighter. Some of them are mini-blowtorches that will char the edge of the pipe, not what you want. A match works fine. Butane is fine, just don't get a blowtorch. Adding sugar will increase the charred layer on the inside of the bowl.
Physics of smoking- after tamping the tobacco in, light up. The burning top layer heats the air beneath, which expands , separating the burning tobacco from the unburned tobacco underneath. The pipe goes out. Expect it. Then tamp the air out, relight. If the smoke gets feeble, put your thumb over the mouth of the bowl , sealing it, and suck. Never blow - just blows the fire away from the tobacco.
Never use a pipe with any metal in it. No tar traps, nothing.
The hot air heats the metal, which re-heats the smoke, leading to tongue bite. The longer the stem, the cooler the smoke. Last item- stay away from drug-store tobaccos. They are full of additives that will bite the tongue. Find a tobacco store. Don't inhale! if you are a former cigarette smoker, the temptation will be to take a big drag, as with a cig. To break this, get a tobacco with lots of Latakia, Like Balkan- you will not inhale THAT many times. If the pipe goes sour, clean it with bourbon. Adds flavor, cleans well.
If you carve your own, look for a straight grain briar. They cost 10 times the cost of a regular pipe, plus. Said to smoke sweeter and cooler. I have owned only one.Really good pipe. If I am telling you stuff you already know, forgive me.
