On a Measuring tape, what is 2 tick lines before the 1/2 inch mark?
I was measuring something yesterday and came out to almost 6 1/2 inches. The edge of it landed 2 tick lines before the half-inch mark. What is that measure?
Also, How far are the closest tick marks apart?
Thank you.
Well, you haven't given enough info for us to figure that one out, because not all tape measures are the same. Generally, they all have ticks at the 1, 1/2, and 1/4 inch marks over their length. Many also have them at 1/8 marks the entire length. However, in the first inch or two of the measure, they often mark off at 16ths or even 32nds, so it depends on not only what part of the measure you were using, but also how the measure was marked to begin with. Often right near the beginning of the measure (the zero inch line) there will be a number, such as 8, 16, or 32 that indicates the smallest tick spacing on the measure. This may reappear anytime the marking changes, so look for this number. You will also notice in many cases the tick marks are of different lengths, to indicate the highest level of their marking, for example marks at even feet are the longest, followed by marks at inches, followed by marks at half inches, followed by marks at quarter inches, etc.
If the measure in that part is marked in 16ths, then 2 before the 1/2 would be 3/8. If it is marked in 8ths, then 2 before the half is 1/4. Hope this helps.
