Should deaf people pay to get into the movies?
I volunteer at a classic movie theater. It's a non-profit place
and we barely keep the utility bills paid. Lately we've had a
group of deaf people who refuse to pay on the grounds that
they 'cannot enjoy the movie'. They've said this repeatedly and
since I know little sign language,I give up and let them in. They
pretend not to understand when I ask that they pay for their
children, who can hear. They all speak and sign, but it's a one
way conversation unfortunately.
How do I handle this without looking like I'm discriminating?
We can't have CC,it all old reel to reel films. We have a blind
woman who comes to the theater weekly and she's never
asked to get in for free..
Yes,I realize that these people do not represent everyone in
the deaf community. But there are about 30-40 of them and
the theater needs to sell those seats not give them away.
I run a group home for people with disabilities and we never expect our people to get in anywhere without paying for the services. We are here to teach them that things in life are not free for anyone no matter who you are. They have to learn that you have to pay for everything in life nothing comes free. I would post a sign for everyone to see about to the fact that you don't pay you don't watch. These people are using their disability to get things free which is not correct.
