I need a deep penetrating wood finish?
I am basically trying to stabilize some spalted maple at home. I have tried to research this online but to no avail (except for small knife scales). My pieces are larger (for guitar tops) and to have them treated professionally will cost a fortune. I would like to try something myself instead! Any suggestions?
Had a furniture repair/ stripping shop & worked on a number of guitars.
Did some research & found that fine accoustic guitars are often french polished ... very time consuming.(lots of recipes online ) & sometimes varnished or lacquered .
Shot lacquer on cheap ones but would not touch antique or fine instruments.
Solid body guitars are just hunks of wood w/ no resonant qualities & just filled & lacquered the hell out of them.
Look into sites for luthiers materials, tools & finishes.
Best regards
