Why does an electric motor to draw more current if you stop it from turning with your hand?
I was messing with my multimeter and came to realize this. What is actually happening to cause the motor to draw more current if the torque on to spindle increased?
Lack of counter EMF. In a motor, you have electrons in a wire in a magnetic field which cause the fields to interact and move, i.e., motor action. At the same time, you are moving a wire in a magnetic field, which is generator action. The generator action is opposite polarity to motor action which is what limits the current. If the motor stops there is no opposing emf from generator action, so the limit is only from the internal resistance. The less load, the faster the motor spins, the greater the generator action, the less current drawn. It eventually reaches a point of diminishing returns and the motor no longer increases in speed with less of an external load. Some motors, such as starter motors in cars, are "series" wound to reverse most of the effect of counter emf so instead of providing negative feedback provides positive feedback. This gives them HUGE starting torque for their size but a lower running torque. It is harder to start an engine turning than it is to keep it turning which the starter being wired as it is fits the job. A series wound motor will burn itself into self destruction if it fails to turn in a matter of seconds.
