i need help with woodworking?
i just bought a Wood Lathe and need some help. can anyone tell me why after i turn something it cracks? also what is the best way to dry wood after it has been cut? i have a lot of Cedar Wood that dont have any visible cracks until i start turning it. if you have any good advice please let me know. i need any advice on wood turning .thanks drb.ob62
The Key problem that most wood turners have with turning green wood is the fact that they try to turn a piece that is not properly split or riven out of the log, most people try to turn from the center of the wood or the pith line (the center growth ring). This is only correct to do when the wood has a moisture level of 3 to 5% or lower depending on the wood. The most critical thing you can do is split the wood into pie shapes and then into eighths. You can use quartered pieces to turn they will warp when they finally dry but until you learn about the wood you are using try to use kiln dried lumber. However if you are dead set on using green wood you need to learn how to properly split wood, how wood moves in the drying process and how to dry the wood slow enough to keep it from cracking apart.
