Easiest way to joint/plane rough cut red oak lumber?
I just recently got into woodworking and have been doing well with pine. I found a good deal on rough cut red oak boards, so I couldn't pass on it. The widths are mostly 5 1/2" and lengths are 9'. Couldn't I take several of the boards, stand them on ends, and run the edges into a planer to get a uniformed joint? That would eliminate the need for a "jointer" tool.please send me some opinions, I'd like to get my oak started, but the tools are what is holding me back. Tell me what to BUY! Less than $300 please. Thanks again
buy a nice straight 1x8 from the lumber yard it can be any specie's of wood just has to be straight and as long or longer than your oak, temporarily sandwich your oaks to the other board so that the .straightest edge is hanging over the least amount you can. then you can ether run a router with a flush trim bit down it to clean up one good edge, or run it thru your table saw . once you have one good edge its a lot easier to clean up the rest of the board. as far as cleaning the flat of the board in the rough start with the con-caved flat down run thru till its cleaned up that side then switch to the other.
